Spaventures for Her: Double Shot, No Whip- Northwest Coffee Exfoliation
Im an ad for Seattle: driving along I-90, admiring the changing leaves as I listened to KEXP and sipped a Starbucks latte. But it takes true dedication to the Northwest aesthetic to allow someone to scrub your body with ground coffee. Thankfully, my caffeine cleanse took place in the idyllic setting of Salish Spa, perched above Snoqualmie Falls, with complimentary soaking pools begging for honeymooners. But I was here on business. It was dead-skin-cell-eradication time. According to my body therapist, Kammin, Id chosen a treatment popular with men (coffee, apparently, sounds more manly than green tea or rosemary with mint). But do men cringe like frightened puppies when a mixture of Dead Sea salt and ground coffee extract is rubbed all over their legs? I asked Kammin to dilute the combination a bit (reminder: Im a wuss), and then settled into my first exfoliationwhich started to feel less and less like being dragged across the beach, and more and more rejuvenating. Your skin is pretty dehydrated, Kammin said, working on my back. I was embarrassed to tell her about the three glasses of wine I had the night before and the latte I chugged right before my appointment. The mixture is ever-so-slightly caffeinated; regular coffee drinkers wouldnt even notice. (Its not Starbucks, she says, just coffea arabica.) Plus, it smelled like mint. After a quick belly scrub, Kammin sent me to the showers to rinse off, then finished with a soothing lotion of jasmine and shea butter. My skin was glowing and smooth afterwardI kept offering my arm to people at work to pet. And to top it off, Salish offered a complimentary Starbucks latte.

Hot Spots for Winter Getaways
Salish Lodge & Spa, perched atop majestic Snoqualmie Falls, is a mere 30 minutes east of downtown Seattle. An ideal refuge after a day of indulging in the areas ample skiing and hiking opportunities, fans of the cult TV series Twin Peaks will recognize the lodge as the exterior of the shows Great Northern Hotel. Salish Lodge & Spa is routinely featured in the best-of lists published by the likes of Cond Nast Traveler, Zagat Guide, and Travel and Leisure, and for the romantically inclined, its been lavished as the most romantic hotel, and best place to propose, and the best place to spend the wedding night. If youre just passing through, Salish Lodge & Spa offers a temping array of food and drink possibilities. Executive chef Tyler- Hefford-Anderson, formerly of Seattles Rainier Club, has been recognized as one of the United States top young chefs by the international gastronomic society Chane des Rtisseurs. If a cocktail and light snack is what youre looking for, The Attic offers a less formal environment but with the same level of gourmet food as the Dining Room, not to mention a spectacular elevated view of the falls. The lodges wine selection is second to none, with more than 1,000 labels represented in a nearly 5,000-bottle cellar. Wine Enthusiasts Magazine, Wine Spectator, Wine Press Northwest, and the Washington Wine Commission have all lauded Salish Lodges wine list, which is one of the most extensive in the region.

Cinematic Panorama - Salish Lodge & Spa
The view doesn't get much more stunning than the point where Snoqualmie Falls and Salish Lodge & Spa converge. The site, also home to two hydroelectric power plants, is a cinematographer's dream - the dramatic landscape and the historic inn were featured in the 1990s cult television series, Twin Peaks, by artist/filmmaker David Lynch. Guestrooms and suites were recently renovated and outfitted in cozy Northwest décor. Resting on the mantel over the wood-burning fireplace in each room are historic photographs curated by the Snoqualmie Valley Historical Society, depicting the people and places of the Snoqualmie Valley. This is hearty breakfast country. The four-course Country Breakfast, including their famous steel-cut oats, sweetened with fireweed honey that servers drip from on high, is a bellyfiller and lodge tradition. Besides offering a magnificent view to watch the sun set, the dining room has an excellent culinary program lead by Chef Tyler Hefford-Anderson, paired with a Washington state-focused wine list. Make reservations throughout December for one of the Purely Northwest holiday Rooms. Combine skiing or snowshoeing with a stay, or beat a path straight to the spa for a pampering hot stone massage. For the holidays, the Lodge will host a special reading of "T'was the Night Before Christmas" by Karolyn Grimes, better known for her role as Zuzu Bailey in the popular holiday film, It's a Wonderful Life. Complimentary cookies and cider will be served, and families are invited to partake in Santa photos.

Spa Escapes
Salish Lodge & Spa - Tucked away in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, Salish Lodge & Spa overlooks the 268-foot Snoqualmie Falls. The facility has eight single treatment rooms and two rooms for couples. There are also two therapeutic mineral soaking pools with treetop views, a eucalyptus-filled steam room and a dry sauna. Earlier this year, the spa unveiled a new menu of treatments, incorporating regionally sourced ingredients such as seaweed from Puget Sound and exfoliants made from organic espresso. Ask about the Green Tea & Northwest Seaweed Salt Glow. This detox treatment buffs the skin to restore the natural glow. Expectant mothers will find this spa to be a sanctuary, catering to all pre-natal needs. This April, the hotel teamed up with skincare line Mama Mio to offer a menu of therapies devoted entirely to the mother-to-be. We like the Yummy Tummy - think facial for the tummy. The treatment uses omega-rich products to maximize skin strength, health and elasticity. Combine that with an upper back, neck and head massage and you've got one happy mother. Guests are encouraged to arrive 30 minutes before treatments to take advantage of the steam room, saunas and soaking pools. Why rush the experience? Getting there: Salish Lodge & Spa is just 30 miles east of Seattle and within 40 minutes of the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

Connecting with the customer: Salishs Murphy shares business philosophy, an article written by Seth Truscott, follows the history and philosophy of John Murphy, Salish Lodge & Spas general manager. Hailing from the east coast, and after graduating from the Culinary Institute of America at Hyde Park, N.Y., Murphy found his first job in the kitchen at a French restaurant in Princeton, N.J. He quickly began to see the bigger picture, that he couldnt control the customer, the dining experience or the facility. When he decided to leave the kitchen behind in favor of restaurant and hospitality operations, he said, I took away what guest service really means. Murphys philosophy is all about connecting with the customer. Many times, you can become close to a customer when there is a complaint, he said. Theyre willing to come to you. You have to listen, to be able to turn that around with a solution. Now you have a customer thats loyal.. In discussing Salishs nearly-completed guest room renovation project, Murphy stated, Were always continuing to reinvent, to evolve, to look at the next level of guest service, while staying true to legacy and tradition that Salish is known for. A six-year employee of Columbia Hospitality, Inc. which operates Salish, Murphy has previously worked for the company at Bell Harbor International Conference Center in Seattle, and Cedarbrook Conference Center in Sea-Tac, Washington.
